About the book

Introducing super sized science fun in bite-sized guides!

With fun, age appropriate experiments and lift the flap conclusions, the I'm a Scientist series explains science in easy to grasp terms with simple photographs and illustrations.

I'm a Scientist: Water Fun introduces kids to all kinds of fantastic experiments with water that they can do right in their own home. With this great new book, kids will discover that science can be easy and fun!

Our Thoughts

Here’s another book that was part of the selection of the What Did You Make on March Break promotion

Ah! Water…. what would be life without it?   Water is definitively one of the most important things for everything on Earth.   Without it we can’t survive.   But water is also the most pleasant thing in the world too!   I’m thinking of the times I swam in the lake on the land of my uncle when I was younger and now my kids are enjoying the great outdoors thanks to the lake at our campsite.

We can learn quite a bit with water too.  How? by doing some easy science experiments found in this book like float or sink, moving through water, how color can be affected by water, hot versus cold while making an underwater volcano, compare the various forms of water (solid, liquid and gas), make music, make a waterwheel and other fun things to do with water.

For example I’ve learned that if you put a lime in a bowl of water it will float but if you peel it, it will sink.   Why?    Well the book explains that

the rind of a lime is like a life jacket that has been filled with thousands of tiny air bubbles that make the lime buoyant.

Fascinating isn’t it?  Try it yourself to see how your lime will react.

For the purpose of this review, I’ve decided to create an underwater volcano with the kids.  I didn’t have ice per say in my freezer so I took some ice packs to cool the water in the vase.

Now I had to include hot water in another glass.   The first thing I grabbed a a small vase that had cracked glass…  unfortunately as I poured the hot water in the vase that had previously some food coloring in it, my small vase cracked and the water was all over the counter.  Oupsy!  Sad smile

I cleaned up the mess and redid it with a wine glass which was interesting though my first vase didn’t had enough water in it.

Seeing the colored cloud spreading in the vase was interesting.   We will redo this with more water one of these days.   But it was a fun experiment to do on a gloomy Wednesday afternoon.

This little book will guide you in experimenting with water in various ways.   Some experiments I would do during the summer time though but other can be done all year round.

Other titles in the series are available for your child to discover the Backyard, Body and Kitchen.
