My Thoughts

I had my eyes on this book and my contact at DK surprised me by sending it to me with another book I had requested to review.  Both my grand-mothers painted at some point in their lives.    And about two years ago, I discovered that I could too!   Mind you I never took courses and I don’t have much time in my hands but whenever possible I try to draw or paint.

My Art Book contains art projects inspired by masterpieces from various artists throughout time.   The child who is going through this book will do some cave painting, will explore dot painting as the aboriginal from Australia do, make a mask like the ones find in Africa, explore the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo with fruits and vegetables or other materials like fall leaves, Lego, or metal pieces, discover the art of Japanese artists, copy a Degas, paint some sunflowers à la Degas, create a jungle collage based on a Rousseau, paint to music based on Wassily Kandinsky`s work, explore lines and shapes like Paul Klee, make a mosaic based on the work of Diego Rivera, sculpt like Henry Moore, build a bird based on what Inuit artists do, and make a pop art print like Andy Warhol.

Each project are well explained and guide you through each step to do it.   A complete list of items needed can also be found.   This book will definitively help you explore various artists and medium used to create art.

The project that I decided to try out is one based on a painting from Edgar Degas – the ballerina.   However, for the project in the book you learn to paint with pastels.   I have pastels in the house and decided to reproduce the painting while following the instructions.

Here’s what I have done while following the steps.   Please keep in mind that I am a budding artist who is exploring various techniques to see what I like/dislike.    I didn’t have light colored pastels like the ones in the step-by-step instructions so I pick colors that I had.

Considering that this is my first time painting with pastels, I am satisfied with the result of my drawing.   Not knowing how to make eyes I decided to leave my ballerina faceless…   Eventually I hope that I can take drawing lessons and hope to develop my skills more.   In the meantime, I will continue to practice and explore some more with the help of my kids.

My Art Book contains interesting projects for you and your kids.   It can also be a great launching pad to learn more about various artists through time.   These projects could be a great way to conclude a study on a specific artist.

My Art Book is available at your favorite bookstore, even amazon.ca.
